Lecture 3 - Progression
During today's lecture, I was hoping to get a chance to discuss my progress with my lecturer. I wanted to discuss my narrative in particular with him as I hadn't really decided on a story line.
I spoke to him about what I had in mind for my opening shot, how we see a person covered in blood and then the rest of this film told the story of how that person got there. My lecturer immediately told me to start thinking of twists, and as soon as he said that, an idea sprang to mind which was "What if the blood didn't belong to that person?"
I began thinking of plot lines that followed this twist, including a man that had just committed a murder who was calling the police, but the viewer wouldn't understand this until the end. My next thought was that this plot may have been a bit too obvious and easy for audiences to anticipate. I needed to come up with something that they may not see coming.
When I came home, I walked all around the house, avoiding communication with anybody, trying to think of how I could make it so the audience may not jump to this conclusion, and after about 3 hours; I thought I needed a break. I sat in front of the TV and the news came on. There was a story about a young woman who had recently been sent to prison, and people who knew her, and other people who lived in the area said things like: "I am completely shocked" "I cannot believe such a young woman would do something like this". It was so obvious! The person the audience first sees should be female, as most murderers in films are male (Not to purposefully sound stereotypical; but its undeniably true.
I am now planning the story and beginning the script and character profiles.
